Stress, Anxiety & Illness

By administrator | October 23, 2007

Anxiety and stress levels in our culture have reached epidemic proportions.  Doctors estimate that as much as 90% of all the illnesses they see on a daily basis revolve around chronic anxiety.  Also on the increase are people suffering from chronic immune dysfunctions – multiple allergies, chronic infections, chronic fatigue, AIDS and hypertension.

Anxiety and stress are everywhere in the modern world, it’s unavoidable because it is in the collective unconscious in the manner of consumerism, debt management, schooling and even politics.  We are anxious because we are surrounded by stress causing agents in our daily lives.  We are taught to consume and then advertising generates anxiety in us in order to suggest that consumption will relieve our problems!  This is a very simple, but effective strategy.  Pharmaceutical companies have also relied on “market-creation techniques” to boost their sales on a daily basis.

Anxiety and stress are also created when uncontrolled consumption is promoted and everyone must go into debt simply to make a living.  Society encourages us to go into debt to move forward in the world.  We are given university loans, automobile loans, and home mortgages, all of which contributes to our anxiety and stress levels.

When the body is under stress it tightens up and that results in the feeling of being anxious.  Commonly people will experience tightening in their neck, shoulders, back or stomach when under stress.  Keeping muscles tight requires energy and that energy has to come from some where. Eventually you run low on energy and then you get sick!

When the body is chronically stressed, the resulting tension uses up a great deal of the body’s energy.  When that energy is used up you eventually succumb to illness of one kind or another.

For example:

It is easy to belittle the effects of stress, but make no mistake about it – stress causes many different illnesses, both mental and physical. If an illness doesn’t respond to conventional treatments, then stress is very likely to blame.

Energy depletions or physical and mental breakdowns become common place in cultures that promote constant energy debt.  Many of us are getting sick in ways that defy rational therapy, leaving us little recourse but to explore our own mental and spiritual resources.

Stress, anxiety and illness are so intimately related that it is impossible to separate them.  Through changing our outlook, the energy locked up in chronic tension patterns can be released, and healing can begin in all dimensions of our being.

The process of letting the tension go can be promoted through proper nutrition and bodywork.  Once you recognize and take responsibility for it, healing will begin.  Proper nutrition means “a balance of whole-foods that fuel the body cleanly, promoting the digestive and elimination systems”.  And plenty of fresh water!
