Identifying the Problem
Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic disorder with pain in the muscles for no obvious physical cause, at least medically speaking…
Fibromyalgia is commonly felt in the upper torso and lower back, shoulders, neck, and back of the head, although any area of the body can be involved. The pain is usually experienced as burning, throbbing, shooting, or stabbing, and is often greater in the morning than later in the day.
The symptoms of Fibromyalgia are almost identical to the symptoms of Lyme disease, so if you feel you may have Fibromyalgia, get a blood test for Lyme disease to rule that out.
Symptoms often include:
- chronic headaches
- odd sensations to the skin
- skin sensitivities
- IBS, colitis, or other bowel problems
- TMJ (problems associated with tension)
- dry eyes and mouth
- dizziness and impaired coordination (activities like climbing stairs or lifting are often very difficult)
- depression is common
- The most distinctive feature is the existence of 9 pairs of muscles known as “the tender points”, where the muscles are abnormally tender to the touch.
- around the lower vertebra of the neck
- at the intersection of the second rib
- in the middle of the knee joint
- in muscles connected to the base of the skull
- in muscles of the neck and upper back
- in muscles of the mid-back
- on the side of the elbow
- in the upper and outer muscles of the buttocks
Disease Specifics
Many people with Fibromyalgia have trouble with deep sleep, which is one of the prime causes of fatigue throughout the day, or a lack of stamina. This disorder is much more common in females than in males, and most often begins in young adulthood.
The problem lies in the body’s inability to absorb and utilize magnesium. Even supplementing calcium/magnesium isn’t always sufficient if the body is having trouble with absorption. I suggest beginning with a homeopathic supplement called BIOMAG, which enables the body to utilize available magnesium in the system.
Your doctor may be having a difficult time putting a “name” to your symptoms, simply because he is looking for a named disease, or a single agent as the “cause” of your disease state… The problem is in most cases there is no one single cause that explains all the symptoms; different toxins cause different reactions within the body. Once you get past the need for a “name” or “identity” to define your own particular disease state, and to simply address the systems and organs that are presently compromised, you can begin the healing process!
In the overwhelming majority of cases defined as Fibromyalgia, the symptoms started as far back as our first vaccinations, or directly to the introduction of antibiotics at some point. Either way it is the beginning of toxic overload from one source or another, leaving both a toxic body and a toxic mind. A toxic body is host to parasites of all kinds, where as health & vitality are only possible in a non-toxic body.
So the answer to the question “Where do I start?” is very simple; start with promoting the body to release stored toxins and introduce the fuel that will do that in the gentlest manner possible.
In Naturopathics we are taught that the primary cause of most disease states is due to “Autointoxication.” In Laymen’s terms, this is where toxins accumulate faster than the body can eliminate them, and organs or systems become compromised as a result.
With Fibromyalgia symptoms point to an imbalance of bacteria and yeasts in the digestive system infiltrating the vascular & reproductive systewms, the lungs and even the brain. The point is arguable as to exactly which agent is actually responsible in each case, but the answer is the same… Treat the body holistically for autointoxication.
The preferred method of dealing with autointoxication on a Naturopathic level is through fasting and cleansing. Fasting is a potent and very rapid method for eliminating toxins from our bodies. For centuries, fasting has been used around the world as an effective therapeutic tool. A conventional fast can be very hard on a body, as fat-soluble toxins are released into the bloodstream. However, with the correct approach, its’ most beneficial results are immune system enhancement, removal of immune complexes from the blood, and removal of food allergens from the intestines. When approached correctly, fasting can be accomplished with minimal effort or discomfort.
Changes in the immune system during fasting include:
-
increased macrophage activity
-
increased cell-mediated immunity (T lymphocytes and lymphokines), -decreased compliment factors, decreased antigen-antibody complexes,
-
increased immunoglobulin levels, increased neutrophil bactericidal activity,
-
depressed lymphocyte blastogenesis,
-
heightened monocyte killing and bactericidal function,
-
and enhanced natural killer cell activity.
If you understood that, great! For the rest of us it simply means the “immune system” is functioning better than ever!
Cleansing involves toxins found in the liver, gull-bladder, lungs, skin, kidneys, both small and large intestines, vascular system, lymphatic system and muscle tissue. The most effective treatment is two to four weeks in a healing retreat designed to initiate this process, followed with a return “tune up” in six months. For those of us who can’t afford to make the time commitment required for a healing retreat, the next best option is to find a colonic therapist where you live and commit to a series of colonics and a fasting program.
The next step involves supplying the body with the highest quality energy source, consisting of vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. The net result is the body is left with sufficient energy to deal with the toxic release and begins the rejuvenation process of the organs and systems that have been compromised. Approached in this manner, results are maximized and discomfort is minimized, so success is far easier to achieve and the results will be long lasting.
No matter how good our food or how pure an environment we live in, we will always be exposed to toxins. Whether from the environment, our intestines, or dysfunctional metabolic processes, toxins are devastating to our health if our detoxification systems aren’t working well enough. Total wellness requires decreasing our exposure to toxins, optimizing nutritional status to ensure that our detoxification systems are working, supplementing with the key nutrients and herbs that strengthen detoxification, and removing toxins from all our elimination systems.
As we cleanse and begin to remove the toxic build up within our bodies, it becomes even more important to supply the best quality nutrients you can, to fuel the elimination systems and the rejuvenation system. Why wouldn’t you? The better the fuel – the better the body!
Let’s take a moment and really look at the whole disease process with Fibromyalgia… The primary symptom can be said to be intense muscle pain. Muscles hurt when they store too much acid wastes, whether created through exercise or through a foreign agent of one kind or another. The end result is the same; the body needs minerals to buffer the acid imbalance. Often symptoms dramatically improve simply by introducing the correct balance of magnesium and calcium which buffer many of the common acids produced in the digestive process. Together they allow muscles to relax. Don’t ever underestimate the importance of simple mineral supplements!! Without minerals, nothing works well for long! But you need the correct form of mineral for maximum absorption and you need the correct mineral compliment as well!
Suggested Supplements:
-
BioMAG to aid in calcium absorption.
-
DMG, or calcium pangamate is perhaps the singlemost important supplement to introduce when dealing with fibromyalgia, as it aids the body in recovery from intense physical activity as well as degenerative diseases. DMG is an adaptogen that works with other cofactors in the body to counteract the negative effects of stress and to promote healing.
-
Milkthistle extract to cleanse and strengthen the liver and gullbladder
-
Coral calcium, or a calcium/magnesium (citrate) blend. 2 – 1 ratio. Also promotes a sound sleep when you take it just before bedtime.
-
CoEnzyme Q10 120 mg daily, is necessary to improve oxygenation of tissues, boost the immune system and to protect the heart.
-
Acidophilus, bifidus, or probiotics to repopulate the intestinal flora destroyed by candida.
-
Lecithin and bee pollen will promote energy, enhances immunity, improves circulation and aids in brain function.
-
Malic acid and magnesium are both involved in energy production in many cells of the body, especially muscle cells, where it is needed for sugar metabolism.
-
Vitamin A (25,000 IU daily) &vitamin E (800 IU daily) are both powerful free radical scavengers that protect the body by enhancing the immune system.
-
Vitamin C with bioflavonoid (5,000 – 10,000 mg daily) has a very powerful antiviral effect and increases energy levels.
-
A high quality soy or whey protein isolate to fuel the body.
-
A greens drink to aid in alkalinizing the body.
-
Colloidal silver boost the immune system.
-
FUBAR (1 capsule) is an herbal stimulant used by body-builders, that is far safer, yet more powerfull than caffeine. It effectively & safely stimulates energy production throughout the body.
